Before Summer 2028

Sandy Island Tennis and Sports Courts

In 2024, with funds collected through your generous donations, we completed an initial engineering study the goal of which was to determine feasibility for various enhancements and upgrades to what is currently the space occupied by our 4 clay tennis courts.  The result of this study was a list of three potential ideas with a broad picture of the potential costs involved. These were not hard estimates, but rough order-of-magnitude figures.

The possible paths presented were 3:

  1. Convert all 4 courts to a more general sports court for use for tennis, pickleball, basketball, etc.
  2. Convert 2 courts to general sports court and leave two courts clay, but cover the whole area so it could be used in inclement weather.
  3. Same as option 2, but with solar panels added to address backup power needs on the island and provide power resiliency and a green energy solution for Sandy Island.

The cost picture for these proposals ranged from $2M – $3M depending on a number of complex and interrelated factors having to due with the difficulties of construction on highly seasonal and intermittently accessible island.

Our Goal for 2025 is to use what we have learned so far to further explore other ideas, and collect additional feedback from the community on the appetite for donor-funded capital enhancements of this magnitude. We need to answer questions like:

  1. Can the clay courts be preserved with new approaches to annual maintenance at a lower cost?
  2. What would the cost of a smaller multi-use sports court at the current area of the basketball court be?
  3. What are the things campers most want to see from a larger budget capital campaign?

A grateful Thank You to our donors, who through their generosity have funded the study that has gotten us to this point [INSERT LINK TO LIVE DONOR LIST]

We are continuing this project in 2025 by assembling a Tennis/Sports Court Task Force. This team will collect and analize feedback from the community with the goal of reccommending a difinitive direction for the project prior to the end of 2025. To apply to join the task force, CLICK HERE.
