Sandy: Tennis Court / Pickleball / Sports Court Engineering Study

It is no secret that the Sandy Island tennis courts are in need of some real TLC! The 4 clay courts have been in a state of decline for many years. The past several years with COVID related setbacks didn’t help. As Sandy enters its 125th year, we believe the time has come to reimagine the area. Pickleball has been gaining popularity rapidly, while interest in Tennis has been on a slow decline. This project will fund an engineering feasibility and camper-desires study to reimagine what’s possible in the space of the tennis courts. Could the surface be multi-use for more than one sport? Could the area be covered with a high roof to accommodate a larger outdoor activity area even in inclement weather? Could solar panels be installed on that roof giving Sandy a sustainable local source of energy? We don’t know, but with the funding of this project we aim to get answers to these questions to make the decisions that best equip the island to serve our camper families for the not to distant future as well as the generations to come.
